The Hair Growth Cycle

Healthy hair grows in a continuous cycle consisting of three main phases. Understanding this cycle helps explain why hair thinning, excessive shedding, and hair loss occur.

  • Anagen Phase (Growth Phase)
    This is the active growth stage of the hair follicle. During anagen, the follicle continuously produces new hair, with healthy hair growing approximately 1 cm each month. Around 85–90% of your hair is normally in this phase, which can last anywhere from 2 to 7 years depending on genetics and overall health.

  • Catagen Phase (Transition Phase)
    Catagen is a short transitional stage that signals the end of active hair growth. The follicle begins to shrink, the blood supply gradually disconnects, and the hair stops growing. This phase typically lasts 2–3 weeks before the follicle enters its resting stage.

  • Telogen Phase (Resting & Shedding Phase)
    During the telogen phase, the hair follicle rests while the existing hair remains in place. At the end of this stage, the old hair is naturally shed as a new anagen hair begins to grow beneath it. This phase usually lasts 2–4 months, and it is normal to lose 50–100 hairs each day as part of this natural renewal process.

DHT Blockers and Hormonal Approaches for Menopause-Related Hair Loss

  • DHT Blockers – Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen that can shrink hair follicles and accelerate thinning in women prone to female pattern hair loss. Medications like topical or oral anti-androgens help block DHT’s effect on the scalp, slowing hair loss and promoting regrowth.
