A More Advanced DHT-Targeting Option for Suitable Men

Dutasteride for Hair Loss in New Zealand

Dutasteride is a prescription medication that may be considered for male androgenetic alopecia — commonly known as male pattern hair loss.

It works by reducing the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone strongly associated with progressive follicle miniaturisation in genetically susceptible men.

At Hair Again Clinic, Dutasteride may be considered in either an oral or compounded topical formulation, depending on your individual hair-loss pattern, treatment history, preferences and medical suitability.

How Does Finasteride Work?

Finasteride belongs to a group of medications known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.

It blocks an enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone strongly associated with male pattern baldness.

Oral Dutasteride – Prescription Tablets or Capsules

Oral Dutasteride is taken by mouth and works systemically to reduce DHT production throughout the body.

For hair loss, oral Dutasteride is generally used off-label. Its approved use in many countries is for benign prostatic hyperplasia rather than hair loss.

However, oral Dutasteride has been extensively studied in men with androgenetic alopecia. Randomised clinical trials have demonstrated improvements in hair count and photographic assessment, including studies using Dutasteride 0.5 mg daily.

Who May Be Considered?

Oral Dutasteride may be considered for suitable adult male clients experiencing:

  • male pattern hair loss

  • progressive crown thinning

  • frontal or mid-scalp miniaturisation

  • ongoing progression despite other treatments

  • inadequate response to Finasteride

  • significant DHT-related follicle miniaturisation

Medical assessment is required before treatment.

At Hair Again, the dose, frequency and formulation are not selected by the client. They are determined following medical assessment by the prescribing practitioner.

Topical Dutasteride– Applied Directly to the Scalp

Topical Dutasteride is applied directly to the scalp rather than taken orally.

The aim is to deliver Dutasteride to the scalp and hair follicles while potentially reducing systemic exposure compared with oral medication.

Topical Dutasteride is a newer and less established treatment than oral Dutasteride. Research is developing, and a 2025 review described topical Dutasteride as a promising area of treatment while also highlighting that formulation, delivery and systemic absorption remain important considerations.

A recent phase II clinical study evaluating topical Dutasteride solutions in men with androgenetic alopecia reported dose-dependent improvements in hair count and hair width over 24 weeks. However, topical formulations remain less extensively studied than oral treatment.

For this reason, we describe topical Dutasteride as an individual compounded prescription option, rather than presenting it as an equivalent replacement for oral Dutasteride.

Why Consider a Topical Formulation?

For some suitable clients, a topical formulation may be considered where:

  • a client prefers treatment applied directly to the scalp

  • systemic oral treatment is not preferred

  • previous treatment history supports considering a topical alternative

  • a prescribing practitioner considers topical Dutasteride an appropriate option

Topical Dutasteride still requires medical assessment.

Applying a medication to the scalp does not mean that systemic absorption is impossible.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Possible Side Effects and Important Considerations

Like all prescription medications, Dutasteride carries potential risks and is not suitable for everyone.

Possible Side Effects of Topical Dutasteride

Potential effects may include:

  • scalp irritation

  • redness

  • dryness

  • itching

  • sensitivity to the formulation or carrier

Because Dutasteride may still be absorbed systemically through the scalp, systemic adverse effects cannot be completely excluded.

Dutasteride and Fertility

Men who are planning a family should discuss this with their prescribing practitioner before beginning treatment.

Dutasteride may affect semen characteristics in some men, including sperm count and motility. These considerations may be particularly important for men with existing fertility concerns.

Your prescribing practitioner can discuss whether Dutasteride is appropriate for your circumstances or whether another treatment may be preferable.

Important Pregnancy Precautions

Dutasteride can pose a risk to a developing male fetus.

Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should not handle leaking or damaged Dutasteride capsules.

Hair Again Clinic does not offer oral or topical Finasteride or Dutasteride to women through our medication pathway.

All prescription medications require medical assessment and are not suitable for everyone. Please review the full safety information and discuss any concerns during your consultation.
