Understanding the connection     l    Finding the right path forward.

Hair shedding after using Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro® or other weight loss medications can be worrying.

We’re here to help you understand why it happens, what may be contributing to the shedding, and how we can support healthy hair recovery and regrowth.

What Are GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications?

GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, Saxenda® and Trulicity® are designed to support weight loss by:

✓ Suppressing appetite
✓ Improving insulin sensitivity
✓ Slowing stomach emptying
✓ Supporting significant weight loss

These medications have helped thousands of people transform their health. However, rapid weight loss and changes in nutrition can sometimes contribute to increased hair shedding.

Understanding Telogen Effluvium—and Other Causes of Hair Loss

Telogen effluvium is an increase in hair shedding that happens when more hairs than usual move from the growing phase into the resting phase. Shedding typically becomes noticeable around two to four months after a trigger, such as illness, surgery, significant weight loss, nutritional deficiencies or emotional stress.

It usually affects the scalp broadly, with more hair appearing in the shower, on your brush or throughout the day. Although the change can feel alarming, the follicles remain intact, and growth can often recover once the underlying trigger has resolved. Recovery takes time, and shedding can persist if a trigger continues.

Not All Thinning Is Telogen Effluvium

Several conditions can cause thinning or shedding, and more than one may be present:

  • Telogen effluvium: Increased shedding following a trigger, usually spread across the scalp.

  • Diffuse hair loss: A description of thinning across the scalp, rather than a single diagnosis. We need to investigate what is causing it.

  • Female pattern hair loss: Gradual thinning, often most noticeable through the central parting and over the top of the scalp, as individual hairs become finer.

  • Frontal fibrosing alopecia: A condition that can cause a receding frontal hairline, eyebrow loss and sometimes redness, scale or discomfort. It can permanently damage follicles and requires prompt medical assessment.

Telogen effluvium can also reveal previously less noticeable female pattern hair loss. This means that addressing a shedding trigger may be only one part of your care plan.

Understanding Your Hair Loss

At Hair Again Clinic, we review your history, examine your scalp and hair under magnification, and assess the pattern of change. We may recommend blood tests through your GP or further assessment by a dermatologist where appropriate.

Understanding the cause helps us guide you towards the right care and realistic expectations for recovery.
